  • Why Titanium V Stakes?

The Kiwi Ultralight team uses and sells these titanium V stakes instead of all the other options, but why?

Titanium is the obvious choice for material given it's the optimal balance of weight to strength compared to other metal options such as aluminum or steel.

Shape is a harder choice. While the traditional Shepard's Hook results in a slightly lighter stake, it has the weakest holding power and can easily pull out in high wind. At the other end of the holding power spectrum is the Y stake, known for holding almost too well on a cold morning. The downsides of the Y-stake are higher weight and less packability leading to loud jingling in the pack.

This is why we decided on the V Stake. The optimal balance of weight to holding power in a slim design that slides easily into most soil types and packs better than other options. The downside to this design is the risk of bending during insertion; but if you slide it into the ground like a knife, rather than pounding it in like a nail, you'll have the best of all options available.
